Additives for Architectural Coatings

Architectural coatings make interior walls or building facades shine in the brightest whites or the most beautiful colors. Our broad range of additives help coating formulators and manufacturers meet all end-user requirements, while reducing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions, and meeting ecolabel requirements.

Broad portfolio and tailor-made solutions for architectural paints

To produce architectural paints and coatings in a cost- and resource-efficient way, coating formulators must avoid foam. We offer a broad range of defoamers and deaerators to ensure the best balance between efficiency and compatibility for any coating formulation. For example, our TEGO® Foamex series of architectural defoamers is dedicated to all types of pigment volume concentration (PVC) at every stage of the coating production and application process.

Different Defoamer Technologies for Architectural Coatings

Evonik offers a complete portfolio of defoamers and deaerators, from organic oil-based to siloxane-based to our unique molecular defoamers.

Coating additives for brilliant whites and high color fidelity

Our additives also help formulators to develop coatings in any desired color. Whether it is pigment wetting, dispersing, grinding aids, or effective stabilization of pigments and particles in various coating systems, we can help you find the perfect combination of products to make building surfaces, exterior coatings and facades shine in any color as well as simplify your formulation process. Even when the most brightest whites are desired, our SIPERNAT® range of additives can help you achieve the highest opacity.

Efficient Wetting and Dispersing Additives

Cost reduction and process efficiency are major tasks for modern formulators. Improve the efficiency of your grinding process with grind aids, surfactants, and dispersants from Coating Additives.

Additives for durable architectural coatings

Our broad portfolio includes products that can increase the durability of a coating, like TEGO® Phobe hydrophobing agents, which efficiently reduce water absorption of the facade and minimize dirt pick-up.

Treating surfaces–such as exterior walls–with water-repellent materials (or materials otherwise impenetrable to water) is an effective method of protection from weathering. To achieve outstanding hydrophobization, different types of silicone chemistries are used.

As problems related to pigment dispersions become more frequent and as requirements regarding color reproducibility become increasingly rigorous, new demands for pigment wetting agents and dispersants are required to resolve these pigment stabilization issues. Over the past 20 years, advances in polymeric dispersants have made significant improvements in the process of wetting and stabilizing pigments. As a result, many dispersant technologies that better stabilize small pigment particles and that better prevent flocculation are emerging in the marketplace. This paper will explain pigment and dispersant interfaces and how harmonizing and optimizing these interactions will lead to a better pigment dispersion.

Waterborne wall and facade paints account for more than 80 percent of the architectural coatings market. For these systems, our portfolio includes additives for high-gloss paints with low pigment volume concentration (PVC), matte paints with medium PVC, to highly opaque paints with a high fillers and pigment level. We also offer suitable products for solventborne coatings.

Effective defoaming is especially important in architectural coatings because it improves the production process. It also provides a homogeneous, smooth and aesthetically appealing painted surface of walls and facades . This makes the choice of the right defoamer or deaerator extremely important.

We offer a wide range of conventional and molecular defoamers that allow to control foam development in formulations based on viscosity, pigment volume concentration (PVC), and other factors.

Protecting our environment, climate and people is a major global challenge. As a result, many formulators are working on developing  architectural paints and coatings with reduced volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, and are moving toward replacing solventborne technologies with waterborne systems.

As this affects the types of additives that can be used, formulators are challenged to achieve a given combination of desired properties for specific applications and formulations, but with a more specific set of raw materials. Luckily, our in-depth knowledge of additives for interior and exterior architectural coatings, High Throughput Equipment (HTE), and applied technology laboratories around the world, can help formulators create coatings with the properties they need.

Additionally, Evonik’s teams of experts can help formulators create future-proof formulations, including bio-based solutions and additives that enable high-quality and durable wall and facade paints, which can be applied more efficiently, thus resulting in less waste.

Our research and development department helps formulators transition to more environmentally friendly systems and offers them alternatives to traditional technologies to reduce the volatile organic compound (VOC) content of their wall and facade paints.

Our long history of expertise in architectural coatings enables us to find innovative solutions for challenging applications. This includes solutions for the special requirements of trim paints. As trim paints are commonly used in window and door frames, the paints must adhere reliably to difficult substrates, have good anti-blocking properties, and be easy to recoat. Our experts are able to take on these and other challenges that are yet to come.

Decorative coatings must comply with certain regulations that vary across the globe. Volatile organic compound (VOC) regulations, for example, are very stringent throughout Europe and North America. Other markets are also reinforcing their regulations to ensure the use of safer and more sustainable coatings. Our regulatory team understands which regulations apply in which regions and keeps you informed of any relevant updates to our product portfolio.

As Ecolabel has become a basic requirement for architectural paints and coatings, our regulatory experts can help you select and assemble raw materials to create formulations that comply with regulations such as Ecolabel or REACH, or even future trends and developments.
