Interview with Sascha Herrwerth and Ruediger Mertsch

Dr. Sascha Herrwerth began working with Evonik in 2003, and since then has worked in various business lines. In 2017, he joined the Coating Additives business, heading the global R&D "Smart Surface Solutions" competence center, specializing in the development of rheological additives. Since 2018, he has been head of the global Applied Technology & Research team, focusing on industrial coatings. Dr. Ruediger Merstch has been in the coatings industry for over 20 years. After holding a variety of applied research director positions for numerous Evonik businesses, Rudiger moved to Shanghai to become head of applied research and technology for Asia Pacific. In 2019, he became head of Evonik's Smart Surface Solutions Center and head of Applied Research and Technology, focused on automotive coatings.

OPTIMIZE YOUR WATER-BASED COATINGS WITH EVONIK'S NEW FUMED SILICA DISPERSION

The business line Coating Additives, with the VP Disp. WF 7620, has developed a new technology for water-based fumed silica dispersions, mainly for the use in automotive, industrial, and wood spray applications. The challenge in water-based spray applications so far was to find a product that combines the advantages of a fumed silica (like outstanding anti-sagging properties and chemical- and water-resistance) with easy to use processability and of course a very high efficiency.

IMPROVE TECHNICAL FUNCTIONALITY WITHOUT COMPROMISING ON ECO-FRIENDLINESS

Generally, in waterborne coatings, the viscosities are much lower compared to solventborne coatings. Thus additives are needed in order to achieve a high-efficiency anti-settlement of any parts that are within the coating (for example, pigments).

Our new dispersion VP Disp. WF 7620 has been developed in order to address this need in the market. No pearl mill is needed in order to implement this dispersion. That means, you just can stir in the dispersion and then it is ready for use. A very important feature of this new dispersion is that high film thicknesses can be achieved. And this is a need especially for waterborne solids. Apart from that, the usage of this dispersion is very easy. You just stir it in with a stirrer; you don’t even need a dissolver in order to do this.

The new dispersion is going to be launched at this year’s China Coat show in Shanghai. We are happy to see you at our booth.
